Past Research Topics

1988 Graduated from Okayama-Ichinomiya Senior Highschool
1992 Bachelor of Engineering (Department of Mathematical Engineering, The Univ. of Tokyo)
1994 Master of Science (Institute of Low Temperature Science, Hokkaido Univ.)
1998 Ph. D., Agriculture (Graduate School of Agriculture, Kyoto Univ.)
1999-present Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in the Institute of Agricultural and Forest Engineering, the Univ. of Tsukuba.
2000-2002 Visitting Scientist to the Numerical Terradynamic Simulation Group, School of Forestry, Univ. of Montana (until March 2002)

To foreign students:

* We have five faculty members:

Prof. Miyamoto, Associate Prof. Hotta, Assistant Prof. Yamakawa, Assistant Prof. Sasai, and myself. Sasai and I are engaged in remote sensing, whereas other three members are working on different research (mountain disaster management).

* We (remote sensing group) have following members (as of Sept. 2014):

Postdoc: 1
Ph. D course: 0
Ms. course: 3
Undergraduate: 1

* We use open-source softwares

We seldom use most of market software products such as MS-Windows, MS-Office, Arc/GIS, ERDAS, ENVI, etc. Instead, we mainly use open-source softwares such as Linux (Ubuntu), GRASS-GIS, QGIS, GCC, LibreOffice, etc. You may need to get used to these open-source softwares because "Do It Yourself" is the basic policy of the open-source.

* We study remote sensing, not GIS.

Our main interest is in development of remote sensing technique. Making something visible with remote sensing is our goal. We don't work hard on integration of layers of GIS information to derive something like planning or assessment. If you want to learn GIS, our group may not be a good choice.

* We have some coorperative institutes especially around Tsukuba:

JAXA/EORC, AIST Geology Remote Sensing Unit, AIST Atmosphere Environment Group, NIES Global Warming Team, Public Work Research Institute, University of Tokyo, Gifu University etc. You may have opportunities of working with people in these institutes.

* You can join us as a master or Ph.D student in this graduate school.
